Heliconia psittacorum Hawaii - Lobster-claw
Heliconia psittacorum Hawaii - Lobster-claw
This rarely available and exotic plant, with upright beauties with long, slender evergreen leaves and wonderful clusters of orange-red bracts which appear throughout summer.
Native from the Caribbean, especially in Jamaica, where it grows naturally on mountainous slopes where forests are already sparser. Can also be found in Indonesia.
This is a houseplant in Ireland, although it can be grown in a container and positioned outdoors in a sheltered spot in the summer, then moved into a frost-free conservatory or a room indoors in winter.
Plant height 75cm. Starting to bloom.
Not edible. Non-toxic if accidentally ingested.
PLANT CARE
Give your heliconia bright light and water it regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Let the soil almost dry out between watering, and avoid allowing heliconias to stand in water.
